If somebody in Slovenia tells you that your flight lands at Brnik, do not start looking for a second airport. Brnik is the local name commonly used for the area of Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport.

The official full name of Slovenia's main international airport. Its IATA code is LJU.

The local geographic name still commonly used by Slovenians, drivers and local media when referring to the airport area.

So if your hotel says “transfer from Brnik” and your airline says “Ljubljana Airport LJU”, they are talking about the same airport.

Brnik is already on the Alpine side of Ljubljana

This is an important little geography detail.

Brnik Airport is not in Ljubljana city centre. It sits north of the capital, closer to Kranj and the Gorenjska region.

Bohinj is also in northwestern Slovenia. So if your destination is Bohinj, it is not normally useful to travel south into central Ljubljana just because the airport has “Ljubljana” in its name.

The road towards Bohinj runs into the Gorenjska region, towards Bled and then deeper into the Bohinj valley.

Brnik → Bohinj is an Alpine transfer, not really a Ljubljana-city journey.

How can you travel from Brnik Airport to Bohinj?

Public transport is possible, but there is no single magical bus that always leaves the terminal and drops every traveller outside a Bohinj hotel.

Depending on the timetable, you may connect through Kranj, Bled or another regional transport point before continuing into Bohinj.

For a solo traveller with time and light luggage, this can still be the cheapest way to travel.

There is no railway station at the airport.

If you specifically want to travel by train, you first need to reach another station by road.

Bohinjska Bistrica, on the other hand, does have a railway station on the scenic Bohinj railway.

From Brnik, you can continue towards Bohinj without first entering central Ljubljana.

It is also one of the two boarding points for Bohinj's panoramic lake boat.

🏔️ Stara Fužina

A traditional alpine village north of the lake and a common base for hiking, cycling and stays near Triglav National Park.

Ukanc lies at the western end of Lake Bohinj, near Vogel and Camp Bohinj.

It is farther into the valley than Bohinjska Bistrica, so road time and transfer pricing can differ.

When booking, send the actual hotel, apartment or address. “Bohinj” is useful for Google. For the driver, we prefer a little more precision. 😄

What does Fraport have to do with Brnik?

Ljubljana Airport is operated by Fraport Slovenija.

Fraport's own current communications still use Brnik when referring to the airport location, while passengers internationally normally see Ljubljana Airport or Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport.

The current passenger terminal is at Zgornji Brnik, and the airport remains Slovenia's main international gateway.
