How to Get from Bohinj to Portorož | Bus, Train, Shuttle & Transfer
Bohinj → Portorož · Alps to Adriatic
How to Get from Bohinj to Portorož
From a quiet alpine morning beside Lake Bohinj to palm trees, hotels, wellness resorts and the Adriatic promenade in Portorož: this is one of Slovenia's biggest changes of scenery in a single journey.
Portorož is sometimes jokingly described as Slovenia's little Monaco. No, it is not actually Monaco. 😄 But compared with the mountain villages of Bohinj, the atmosphere is certainly different: large hotels, marinas, casinos, spas, beaches and a much more resort-style coast.
You can travel from Bohinj to Portorož by bus, train combined with road transport, shared shuttle, rental car, taxi or a pre-booked private transfer.
For one traveller on a budget, regular bus is usually the first option worth checking.
The journey normally involves travelling from Bohinj towards Ljubljana and then continuing from Ljubljana towards the Slovenian coast.
Public transport is much cheaper than a private vehicle, but the total journey can take several hours because of waiting time and connections.
By road, Bohinj → Portorož is roughly a cross-country drive from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic, normally around two and a half hours depending on your exact starting point, traffic and coastal congestion.
If you have time, take the cheaper option. If you have several passengers, lots of luggage or simply want hotel-to-hotel transport, a direct vehicle becomes more attractive.
Ways to travel from Bohinj to Portorož
🚌
Bus via Ljubljana
For most public-transport travellers, bus is the easiest route to understand.
Travel from Bohinj towards Ljubljana, then continue from Ljubljana Bus Station towards Portorož or the Slovenian coast.
Depending on the timetable, the coastal bus may also stop in Koper, Izola, Lucija or Piran.
If your hotel is close to the Portorož bus stops and you travel light, this can be a perfectly sensible budget solution.
Best for budget travellers🚆
Train + bus / taxi
Bohinjska Bistrica has a railway station, but Portorož does not.
You can use rail for part of the journey, for example through western Slovenia or towards a larger transport hub, but the final section to Portorož must be completed by road.
Train therefore makes most sense if you enjoy rail travel rather than if your priority is getting to your hotel as quickly as possible.
Scenic, but not direct🚐
Shared shuttle / GoOpti
Shared shuttle platforms can sometimes offer an attractive middle ground between public transport and a private car.
For one or two passengers, it is worth checking GoOpti and other available shuttle options for your exact travel date.
A shared seat may cost considerably less than reserving an entire private vehicle.
But compare like with like: a private shuttle booking is a different product from one shared seat and can be much more expensive.
A rental car is useful if Portorož is only one stop on a longer Slovenian road trip.
Driving gives you freedom to stop in Ljubljana, the Karst region, Postojna, Škocjan or somewhere else on the way.
Unlike Piran's historic centre, Portorož is much more road-accessible, but hotel parking can vary considerably. Check whether your accommodation includes parking and whether any daily charge applies.
Good for a wider Slovenia itinerary🚖
Local Bohinj taxi
A taxi based in Bohinj or Gorenjska may offer a better price than Taxi Legende because their vehicle is already closer to your pickup location.
For a long trip to the coast, ask for the complete fixed price to your exact hotel or destination in Portorož.
Local provider may be cheaper⭐
Taxi Legende private transfer
Taxi Legende provides Bohinj → Portorož as a pre-booked private door-to-door transfer.
We collect you from the agreed accommodation in Bohinj and take you directly to your hotel, resort, marina or another road-accessible point in Portorož.
For families, several passengers, large luggage or travellers moving directly from one hotel to another, this is where private transport becomes especially convenient.
Direct hotel-to-hotel travel
Taxi Legende price – Bohinj to Portorož
🚘 Car
from €220
For up to 4 passengers, provided passengers and luggage fit safely and comfortably in the vehicle.
🚐 Van
from €340
For larger groups, additional luggage or bulky items requiring a larger vehicle.
The final price depends on the exact Bohinj pickup location, exact hotel or destination in Portorož, departure time, passenger count and luggage. Every final price is confirmed before booking.
Bohinjska Bistrica, Ribčev Laz, Stara Fužina and Ukanc are not the same starting point.
Likewise, Hotel Kempinski, Bernardin, Lucija, a marina or a private apartment can mean different coastal access and driving distance.
Portorož hotels, resorts and “Slovenian Monaco”
🏨 Hotels & wellness resorts
Portorož is Slovenia's classic seaside resort destination. Many visitors stay in larger hotels with wellness centres, pools, restaurants and direct access to the promenade.
For a private transfer, send the exact hotel name so the driver can use the correct entrance or drop-off point.
🌊 Bernardin
The Bernardin area sits between Portorož and Piran and includes major hotels and convention facilities.
If your booking says “Portorož” but your accommodation is actually in Bernardin, send the hotel name. It saves guessing.
⛵ Marina & Lucija
Lucija and the marina area are directly connected with Portorož but can be a different final road destination.
Again, the exact address matters more than the general word “Portorož”.
🎰 Casino, promenade & nightlife
Portorož has a much more resort-style atmosphere than Bohinj: casinos, restaurants, bars, beach clubs and evening activity along the coast.
That is where the joking “Slovenian Monaco” comparison comes from. Take it as a smile, not a geography lesson. 😄
Portorož or Piran – what is the difference for transport?
The two destinations are very close, but they are not identical for road transport.
Piran has a compact historic centre with much more restricted vehicle access.
Portorož is built around hotels, the coastal road, resorts and modern visitor infrastructure, so road access is generally easier.
That is one reason we keep Bohinj → Piran and Bohinj → Portorož as separate travel guides instead of pretending the two destinations are exactly the same.
Same coastline. Different type of stay. Different final few kilometres.

A fair price comparison
If one traveller compares a private car from €220 with a public bus ticket, the public bus is obviously cheaper.
That does not need marketing mathematics. 😄
The calculation changes when several passengers share the vehicle, carry large luggage or want to move directly from a Bohinj hotel to a Portorož resort.
Four passengers sharing €220 is very different from one passenger paying €220.
Public transport wins on price. Private transport often wins on time, luggage and door-to-door convenience.
Platform or direct booking?
A shared shuttle platform may offer a very good price for one passenger if an available departure suits the schedule.
Taxi Legende is a direct booking. Before pickup, we can confirm the driver, vehicle and registration number.
You therefore know exactly which vehicle is collecting you.
And if your wallet, phone, bag, scarf or suitcase accidentally continues to Portorož without you, you know exactly who drove the car and who to contact.
Shared platforms can win on price. Direct contact wins on knowing exactly who is responsible for your transfer.
Booking information
Why we may require a 50% advance payment
Taxi Legende is based in Ljubljana. For a journey starting in Bohinj, our vehicle may travel from Ljubljana specifically to collect you.
For first-time customers we may therefore require a 50% advance payment to reserve the vehicle and pickup time.
How payment works
Once the route, vehicle, pickup time and final price are agreed, we send a payment link for the advance payment.
The remaining amount can normally be paid to the driver by cash or card, unless agreed otherwise.
Changing your plans is normal. Just tell us before the driver is already on the way from Ljubljana to Bohinj. 😄
The Legende rule
We do not do “Portorož right now”
“Hello, we just finished breakfast in Bohinj. Can you take us to Portorož now?”
Nice idea. Small logistical problem: we may still be in Ljubljana. 😄
Taxi Legende works primarily with pre-booked longer-distance and airport transfers.
We do not keep a vehicle permanently waiting in Bohinj. If you need an immediate local car, a local taxi will normally be faster and may also be cheaper.
But if you tell us: “Tomorrow, 09:00, Bohinj hotel, 4 passengers, Portorož hotel” — perfect.
Known route. Known pickup. Known hotel. No “now-now”.
Who are Taxi Legende?
Taxi Legende is a Ljubljana-based private transfer service working by advance reservation.
We provide airport and longer-distance transfers around Slovenia and neighbouring countries.
Cars and vans are selected according to passenger count and luggage.
We do not claim private transport is always the cheapest option. Sometimes bus, train or shared shuttle makes more sense.
Our service is for travellers who want a fixed pickup time, known vehicle, direct contact and one journey from accommodation to accommodation.
Advance booking required · Car from €220 · Van from €340 · Final price confirmed before booking.

Ljubljana airport landing - Welcome
January-18-2014
When arriving in Slovenia by plane, most travellers land at the country’s main international gateway – Ljubljana Airport (Jože Pučnik Airport Brnik). After landing, one of the first questions is how to get from Ljubljana Airport to your final destination. Whether you are travelling to Ljubljana city, Bled, Bohinj or the Slovenian coast, there are several transport options available.
1. Airport taxi (fast but expensive)
Right outside the terminal, you will find official airport taxis waiting. This is the quickest way to leave the airport, but also the most expensive option. A Ljubljana Airport taxi to Ljubljana city (approximately 25 km) usually costs between €50 and €80, depending on traffic, time of day and pricing conditions. Prices are not always fixed, which c
